What actually happened?
On 10 June 1838 a group of white settlers murdered 28 Aboriginal men, women and children near Myall Creek Station in northern New South Wales, near Bingara. Seven of the killers were tried and hanged.
Why were the men found innocent?
The white men were originally found innocent because there were no witnesses except for the murderers and the killers. They also disposed of the bodies, therefore there was no evidence to prove guilty.
Why were they later found guilty?
The men were later found guilty because they murdered children as well and the court decided that it was not acceptable that young and innocent children were killed.
What did this mean for the Australian Society at the time?
This was one of the most significant times in the history of Australia because it was the first time the white man was accused of murdering an Aboriginal community. This changed the Australian society dramatically because the acceptability of killing Indigenous people was changed and the rights of Aboriginals was revisited.
Why has Murdering Creek Road such a gruesome name?
Murdering Creek road got its name when a number of Aborigines were killed by a group of whites, 140 to 150 years ago. This is obviously a very gruesome name, because it is named after such a horrible event.
