Good Will Hunting
What is Green Hunting?
Green hunting is a way for hunters to get the thrill they would get by hunting the animals without actually killing them, and help conserve wildlife in the process.
Where and what is Kwandwe?
Kwandwe is a large animal reserve near Capetown. People pay thousands of dollars to be able to hunt animals. The animals in the reserve are monitored and looked after, and a lot of the money the park makes goes towards the conservation of species that live there
Why is a qualified Vet employed?
The employment of a qualified vet is one of the conditions of green hunting. The vet comes along on hunts and is able to ensure everything is carried out properly with as little harm to the animal as possible. They also are able to help the animal if something goes wrong
How much does a hunt cost?
The hunt costs around 10 000 dollars
How long does it take for the drugs to take effect?
The drugs take 20-30 minutes to take effect.
Why is the animal at risk each time it is darted?
If the dart hits the wrong spot or doesn't go in properly, then it is likely the animal will charge or react in someway, which will result in the hunters having to kill/injure the animal in self defense. There is also the risk of the drug not working properly or having a negative effect for whatever reason
Why are microchips inserted into the rhino’s horn?
Microchips are inserted into the Rhinos horn because poachers are less likely to kill them if their horns are micro chipped.
How much are horns worth on the black market?
Rhino horns are sold for around $500 000 a kilogram. This is because some people are falsely lead to believe that rhino horns have medicinal properties such as the ability to cure cancer.
How many animals could be shot each night before Green hunting?
The night before Green hunting 275 could be shot.
Why is Green Hunting controversial?
Some people believe that the hunters are just darting the animals for the thrill of the hunt and the trophy photo, and therefore putting the animals life at risk for something not important. However others believe that whether or not that is peoples motivation, there are too many benefits such as micro chipping, a full health check, and funding towards the park (and therefore the conservation of animals) for this to be an issue
Do you think that Green Hunting is an effective conservation strategy? Why?
I believe that Green hunting is an effective and clever conservation strategy. Instead of killing animals, hunters are helping them, whilst still achieving the "thrill" that they desire. Essentially, not only is it stopping a lot of hunting, but providing a constructive alternative. Green hunting has many benefits. Perhaps the biggest is the large amount of money that the parks receive, most of which goes directly to the animals. The animals are also micro chipped in order to put off poachers, given a health check up, and sometimes even equipped with a tracking device. It gives the park a chance to monitor the health and numbers of animals in the park. Some people question whether it is right that hunters tranquilise animals for the thrill of the hunt and the trophy photo sitting next to the unconscious animal. Regardless of if this is there motivation, it is a small price to pay for the overall benefits provided by this program. As long as it is continues to be carried out in a safe and controlled manner, it is an effective conservation strategy and certainly a better alternative to hunting.
