Jean-Pierre Houel/The Bridgeman Art Library/Getty Images Today, France still celebrates Bastille Day. When the people stormed the Bastille, Louis finally got the hint that revolution was nigh. a) What happened during the Storming of the Bastille? The storming of the bastille took place on the east side of France on the morning of the 14 of July 1789.The Bastille was a fortress that represented royal power in the centre of Paris. The cause of this was the peasants and commoners were being frustrated for not being able to make more progress in writing a constitution when the national assembly met. b) Who might have supported this event? ? Source 2: A colored engraving shows the runaway royal family busted by French democrats. King Louis and Marie Antoinette were apprehended in Varennes, just miles from the Austrian border. Some say the strong scent of the queen's perfume gave their whereabouts away. a) What does the above photo indicate about King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette? When I see this image I see that the Queen and King were privileged and living in luxury, and were stormed in by the commoners and police that where living in poverty. b) Why were they being arrested? Thanks to the previous rulers, when King Louis inherited the kingdom it was close to bankruptcy, and once he became the ruler the economy only got worse. He tried to escape imprisonment, when Paris Mobs stormed the Bastille. But he was caught and brought to trial and sentenced to execution. Source 3: In this engraving, titled "The Awakening of the Third Estate," an aristocrat and clergyman are horrified to see a man casting off the shackles of his class. Theorist Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes wrote that "Nothing can succeed without [the Third Estate]." a) Which estates do the three men represent in the above photograph? This image shows the higher person in the social ranking is attacking a commoner or an individual that is lower in the rankings. A clergy defending the person and holding back the higher classed royal. b) What message is being portrayed about the Estate System in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo. It is showing that the commoners were treated poorly and were not able to defend themselves, either because they would be executed for denying the nobility their power or thrown into prison. The clergy being loyal and respectful of them and defending them knowing they have a higher class so they will not be treated poorly because they defended them. Source 4: This watercolor image on cardstock shows the motley assortment of people to whom the French Revolution gave a voice. a) Identify the following for the above photograph; who is being represented in this picture? This image gives evidence that none of the lower class commoners were give any or little attention or voice when something that was being considered or debated. The royalty or the higher class man is up on a block to show that he is higher than everyone there and should be given more say because he has a higher power. b) What important event might this photograph represent? This phot may represent the political crisis. I have assumed this because people with no power where given no say in what happened politically and the higher powers where given the most important and final say rather than the commoners. Source 5: The 1791 slave rebellion in Santo Domingo, which gave way to the Haitian Revolution, was inspired, in part, by the French Revolution. The world was rife with revolutionary fervor, given that the French Revolution, in turn, had been influenced by the American Revolution. a) Who is causing havoc in this photo? In this picture the commoners are fighting with the guards of knights that were ordered to invade there towns and villages. b) What caused this violent behavior? This was caused by the commoners not getting a say politically and being treated poorly. The commoners would have to pay large amounts for taxes and other not having to. This would have angered the commoners and caused raids and tension between the classes. Last question: Use any 3 of the above sources Refer to at least 3 of the above sources in your answer, explain (in your own words) why the French Revolution was considered a period of violence and bloodshed but also brotherhood and liberty. I think that the French revolution was considered a time of violence because as you saw in the 5th source there were raids and battles in the villages, towns and other building such as the Bastille, in source 1, which was stormed by the Paris citizens which was an extremely violent raid. The power the King, Queen and nobles had over the commoners was great amounts which the commoners didn't agree with because they weren't given a say like a stated in source 4. |
